Trazodone is an oral tablet used to treat depression. It works to improve mood, appetite and energy level in those pets with a major depressive disorder (MDD). Trazodone also helps to decrease the anxiety and insomnia that can accompany depression. It comes as a tablet, so you can easily hide it in your dog's wet food or a pill pocket to make administration even easier.

Uses

Trazodone hydrochloride tablets are indicated for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD).

Possible Side Effects

Most common adverse reactions are edema, blurred vision, syncope, drowsiness, fatigue, diarrhea, nasal congestion, weight loss.

Precautions

  • Trazodone shouldn't be used in pets with hypersensitivity or allergy to the drug. Trazodone should be administered exactly as directed by your veterinarian.
  • This drug is FDA-approved for human use. However, it is common practice for veterinarians to prescribe such drugs for use in dogs and cats.
  • Do not use Trazodone in patients that are hypersensitive to it or those that have recently used MAO inhibitors such as amitraz and possibly selegiline.
  • Use with caution in patients with severe cardiac disease or liver or kidney problems.
  • Trazodone may dilate the pupils, triggering an acute crisis in patients with angle-closure glaucoma.
  • Overdoses can be very dangerous. Keep out of the reach of children and animals.
  • Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your veterinarian. If you have difficulty giving the medication, contact your veterinarian.
  • If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to the regular schedule. Do not give two doses at once.
  • This medication should only be given to the pet for whom it was prescribed.
