Metronidazole is an oral medication prescribed for the treatment of various types of infections, including bacterial infections and protozoal infections caused by parasites. Two serious adverse reactions reported in pets treated with metronidazole have been convulsive seizures and peripheral neuropathy, the latter characterized mainly by numbness or paresthesia of an extremity.
Drug & Food Interactions
Discuss all other medications or supplements your pet is taking with your veterinarian before giving Metronidazole. Interactions are possible with anticoagulants, cimetidine, phenobarbital, phenytoin, and some sedatives/tranquilizers. Other drug interactions may occur.
Precautions
This medication should not be given to pets who are pregnant or lactating. Pets who are debilitated or who suffer from liver disease should take Metronidazole with extreme caution.
This drug is FDA-approved for human use. However, it is common practice for veterinarians to prescribe such drugs for use in dogs and cats.
